Also sometimes just referred to as  LVP,  a vinyl plank is made of luxury vinyl that is cut into strips. It's then mounted on boards to mimic hardwood planks. Add a gloss finish, and you'll have a floor that came straight out of the design pages. It will give you a high-end look, but without the price tag.

A member of the luxury vinyl flooring (LVF) family

LVF is an affordable, stylish, and amazing mimic of wood, tile, or stone. Every image is taken with 3D photography for true-to-life images that show the knots, grains, and wormholes of wood; the veining and color variations of stone, or the bold patterns and vivid colors of tile.

All follow current trends so you can (affordably) get that farmhouse-style kitchen; the playful retro-style family/game area or the luxurious marble bath.

Technology has given us embossing features. They give the floor added depth, dimension, and textured appearances: wire-brushed (particularly popular right now), hand scraped, weathered or distressed.

While the plank cut is most often associated with wood, many also use it for stone looks.  They feel the larger format/fewer seams give it a more realistic look of quarried marble or some other stone.

LVF can also be cut into groutable, square-shaped tile-pieces.

The difference between luxury and standard sheet vinyl

Luxury is a newer, more advanced version.  This vinyl is heavier and has a thick clear melamine wear layer that protects the floor from scratches, scuffs, and wears from foot traffic.  That wear layer also keeps liquid from absorbing; spills sit at the top waiting to be wiped off. This is considered to be one of the most kid and pet-friendly floorings.

Other benefits include easy care with only a regular sweeping and periodic mopping.  Installers love this fast, uncomplicated technique; the pieces click together and hover over existing subfloors with no nails, staples, or glue needed.
